About TaxPost

Starting a company takes nerve. Filing its accounts shouldn’t.

We prepare and file your accounts and Corporation Tax return. You can ask as many questions as you need. Nothing is filed until you've approved it. You don't need to be an accountant to know it was done properly.

Why I built TaxPost

Why I built TaxPost

Tom Hirst, founder and director of TaxPost

I built the filing service I wanted to use.

I've run a small company alongside a full-time job, and I've spent eight years building software for payments, data and AI. Neither prepared me for how little help a small company gets with its own accounts.

The filing isn't the hard part. The hard part is everything behind it. Every transaction you categorise through the year has a tax consequence, and the treatment you choose changes your position. Most directors I've spoken to know that. What they don't get is anyone who will tell them how it should be done, and why.

The options haven't changed in years. A discount accountant will file it, but explains very little, and the fee doesn't buy the time for all your questions. Doing it yourself means trusting that your books were right all year. And for most micro companies the accounts are nobody's main job. They're often a side business, as mine was. So the deadline arrives late, the work gets rushed, and you wait days for a Companies House code while the clock runs down.

I kept hearing the same story from other directors. Not people who were bad at business. Busy people who simply couldn't get a straight answer.

In my last role I built AI that supported investment decisions on commercial property worth billions. In that work, a number nobody can explain is a number nobody trusts. Every answer has to trace back to its source.

TaxPost brings that standard to company filing. We go through every transaction in your records and ask you about anything that doesn't look right. We look for the rules and reliefs that apply to you, and explain what we did and why in plain English. You see the finished accounts and tax return before anything is sent, and we file only when you say so.

And when you email us, a person replies. Software helps us do the work faster and more carefully, but you'll never be left talking to a help page.

I started TaxPost because I think more people should start and run companies in this country, and the paperwork shouldn't be what stops them. Filing is where we're starting.

What changes when you hand it to us

Three things we do differently, and how each looks in practice.

Your questions

Answers come from your records, not a help page.

Ask as much as you need. You get plain-English answers and worked examples from your figures.

There's no limit on questions.

Your TaxPost assistant answers routine questions straight away.

When a question needs judgement, a person takes over.

Who answers your questions

For example

Example of an answer drawn from your records. You ask what disallowable expenses means for the company. The answer explains it in plain English. It points to a client lunch in March, in the company's own records. The lunch's amount is hidden. The entry is shown beneath the answer.

Our checks

We look closer than a form does.

We check every transaction in the records you provide. We do it before your accounts and tax return are ready to approve.

Software makes us faster. It doesn't make us less careful.

We use software, AI and your answers. Every transaction, not a sample.

In Managed, a qualified accountant reviews it all before you approve.

How we use AI, and where people check

For example

Example of a closer look at one entry. A monthly design software payment in April was put under equipment. Its amount is hidden. It is marked as needing your answer. Our question asks what it was for. Then it can go under software costs before the accounts are drafted.

Your approval

Nothing is filed until you’ve seen it.

See the exact accounts and tax return. Ask for changes, and approve the final versions. Only then do we file.

If we make a preparation or submission error, we'll correct it.

We'll resubmit your approved filing at no extra service charge.

If our delay makes your filing late, we pay the penalty.

When we pay a late-filing penalty

For example

Example of the approval step. The latest annual accounts, for Companies House, await approval. So does the Corporation Tax return, for HMRC. The tax due is shown with its amount hidden. The director can approve and file, or request changes.

Questions directors ask before using TaxPost

Filing is where we start, not where we stop.

Your annual filing is only one piece of the admin between you and your business. There are the records behind the accounts, the questions that come up between year-ends, and the quiet sense that someone competent ought to be holding all of it.

Our ambition is to take more of that on, until running a company feels like something any capable person can do. We'll describe what we offer when we can offer it properly. Today, that is company filing done well.
